Roofing Dumpster Size Calculator: What Size for Your Roof?
By Keith McDonald•

Roofing debris is one of the heaviest materials you'll put in a dumpster. Here's how to size your rental correctly.
How Much Do Shingles Weigh?
A "square" of roofing covers 100 square feet. Typical weights:
- 3-tab shingles: 200-250 lbs per square
- Architectural shingles: 300-400 lbs per square
- Multiple layers: Multiply by the number of layers
Sizing by Roof Size
Small Roof (under 1,500 sq ft / 15 squares)
15-yard dumpster ($350) — handles a single-layer tear-off of a smaller ranch or cape.
Medium Roof (1,500-2,500 sq ft / 15-25 squares)
20-yard dumpster ($400) — the standard choice for most Massachusetts colonials and larger ranches.
Large Roof (over 2,500 sq ft or multiple layers)
20-yard dumpster + swap-out — we'll swap the full dumpster for an empty one to keep your project moving.
Roofing Dumpster Tips
- Load shingles flat — stacking them evenly distributes weight
- Don't overload — keep debris below the rim
- Include all materials — underlayment, flashing, and nails add up
- Schedule delivery the morning of tear-off — fresh dumpster, no delay
Typical Roofing Project Costs
For a 2,000 sq ft roof (single layer):
- Dumpster rental: $400 (20-yard)
- Estimated debris weight: 4,000-6,000 lbs
- Weight charges: $800-$1,200
- Total dumpster cost: ~$1,200-$1,600
