Garage Sale Tips & What to Do with the Leftovers - McDumpsters

A garage sale is a great way to make money on items you no longer need — but what happens to everything that does not sell? Most garage sales leave you with a driveway full of unsold junk that still needs to go somewhere. Here is how to run a successful garage sale in Massachusetts, price items to actually sell, and handle the leftovers without making multiple trips to the dump.

Garage Sale Pricing Tips

The #1 mistake at garage sales is pricing too high. People come to garage sales for deals — if your prices are close to retail, items will not sell.

| Item Category | Suggested Price Range |

|--------------|----------------------|

| Clothing | $1 - $5 per item |

| Books | $0.50 - $2 each |

| Kitchen items | $1 - $10 |

| Small electronics | $5 - $25 |

| Furniture | 20-30% of original price |

| Tools | $2 - $20 |

| Kids toys | $0.50 - $5 |

| Decor and knick-knacks | $1 - $5 |

Pro tip: Price everything before the sale day. Stickers or masking tape with prices written in marker work fine. Unpriced items get skipped.

Setup Tips for a Successful Sale

  • Timing: Saturday 8 AM - 2 PM is the sweet spot. Serious buyers arrive early.
  • Signs: Put signs at nearby intersections with your address and large lettering. Balloons help.
  • Display: Set items on tables at eye level, not on the ground. Hang clothing on a rack or clothesline.
  • Small bills and change: Start with $50 in ones and fives. Consider Venmo/Cash App for larger items.
  • Group similar items: All tools together, all kitchen items together, all kids stuff together.
  • Half-price hour: Announce half price on everything the last hour to move more inventory.

What to Do with Unsold Items

This is the part most people dread. The sale is over, and half the stuff is still sitting on your driveway. Here are your options, in order of preference:

1. Donate

Pack up usable items and drop them at Salvation Army, Goodwill, or Habitat for Humanity ReStore the same day. Do not bring it back inside the house — that defeats the purpose.

2. Post Free on Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist

Put "free — first come first served" items on the curb and post the address. Low-value items often disappear within hours.

3. Schedule Junk Removal

For everything that did not sell and is not worth donating, call McDumpsters. We will come pick it all up — usually the same day or next day.

  • A few boxes and small items: $75 - $150
  • Driveway full of leftover furniture and junk: $250 - $500
  • Large volume (full truck): $500 - $800

The Post-Sale Plan

Before your garage sale, have a plan for leftovers:

  • Keep a "donate" pile separate during the sale — items that do not sell go straight to donation
  • Schedule a junk removal pickup for the day after the sale
  • Do not bring unsold items back into the house — the whole point was to get rid of them
