Smallest Dumpster Rental: Why the 15-Yard Beats the 10-Yard

Smallest Dumpster Rental: Why the 15-Yard Beats the 10-Yard - McDumpsters

The smallest dumpster most companies offer is a 10-yard. Ours is a 15-yard, and it costs less than their 10-yard. That is not a typo. That is what happens when you cut out the national broker, the call center, and the seventeen line items that show up after the "introductory rate."

The Short Version

The standard industry smallest dumpster is a 10-yard roll-off. National companies charge around $582 for one. We skip the 10-yard entirely and start at a 15-yard for $350 flat in Massachusetts. You get 50% more space for 40% less money. The catch is that there is no catch.

15-Yard Dumpster Dimensions

  • Length: 16 feet
  • Width: 7.5 feet
  • Height: 4.5 feet
  • Capacity: 15 cubic yards (about 4 to 5 pickup truck loads)

It fits in a standard driveway. We have delivered these to tight North Billerica driveways, narrow Chelmsford side streets, and one backyard in Lowell accessible only through a gate that the homeowner swore was too small. It was not too small. We do this every day.

Why We Do Not Rent 10-Yard Dumpsters

A 10-yard dumpster holds about 3 pickup truck loads. That is a single bathroom gut or a small garage cleanout. The problem is that most people who think they need a 10-yard actually need a 15-yard. They just do not know it yet.

A bathroom remodel generates more debris than people expect. Old tile, cement board, vanity, toilet, drywall, framing. That fills a 10-yard to the brim and then you are calling for a second haul, which costs another delivery fee. Two delivery fees plus two trip fees costs more than just starting with a 15-yard.

National companies love the 10-yard because it creates repeat business. We would rather drop the right size the first time and not hear from you again until the next project. (We will also accept hearing from you because you told your neighbor. That works too.)

Price Comparison: 10-Yard vs 15-Yard

| Company | Size | Advertised Price | What You Actually Pay |

|---------|------|-----------------|----------------------|

| National average (10-yard) | 10-yard | $582 | $582 + fuel surcharge + environmental fee + overweight penalty |

| McDumpsters (15-yard) | 15-yard | $350 flat | $350 + $0.20/lb on actual dump ticket weight |

The national average for a 10-yard dumpster rental is $582, according to HomeGuide and Budget Dumpster data from 2026. That is the sticker price. The real price after fuel surcharges, environmental fees, and weight penalties runs higher.

Our 15-yard is $350 flat. That includes delivery, pickup, and a 72-hour rental period. You also pay $0.20 per pound based on the actual dump ticket from the disposal facility, not an estimated weight. No fuel surcharge. No environmental fee. No surprise charges.

A typical garage cleanout in the 15-yard runs $500 to $600 total. A kitchen remodel runs $800 to $1,100. Those numbers are real. We have the dump tickets to prove it.

When the 15-Yard Is the Right Call

  • Garage cleanout. Old furniture, boxes, broken lawn equipment. Fits easily.
  • Bathroom renovation. One full bathroom gut with tile, vanity, and fixtures.
  • Basement cleanout. Years of accumulated stuff. The 15-yard handles it.
  • Small deck demolition. A 12x12 deck generates about 3 to 4 cubic yards of debris.
  • Roof tear-off (single layer). A standard ranch or cape roof fits in a 15-yard.
  • Estate cleanout (partial). One or two rooms worth of furniture and personal items.

When You Need Bigger Than the Smallest

If you are doing a whole-house cleanout, a major renovation, or any project involving heavy materials like concrete, brick, or dirt, the 15-yard will not be enough. Heavy materials hit the weight cap before they fill the volume. A 15-yard of concrete would be overweight at about one-third full.

For those jobs, step up to a [20-yard ($400)](/blog/20-yard-dumpster-guide) or [30-yard ($600)](/blog/dumpster-sizes-guide). The price difference between a 15 and a 20 is only $50. Two delivery fees and two trip fees cost a lot more than that.

Rule of thumb: If you are debating between sizes, go one up. The cost difference is small. The cost of a second haul is not.

Massachusetts Dumpster Rules

A few things to know before we drop the bin:

  • Textiles are banned from MA landfills since November 2022. Clothing, shoes, towels, sheets cannot go in the dumpster in large quantities. Small amounts mixed with other debris are usually fine. For large amounts, use your town's textile recycling drop-off.
  • Appliances with refrigerant (fridges, freezers, AC units) need the refrigerant evacuated by a certified technician before they go in. We can handle this.
  • Hazardous materials (paint, chemicals, asbestos, lead) require a licensed abatement contractor. They do not go in a roll-off.
  • Yard waste has been banned from MA disposal since 1991. Small amounts mixed in are typically accepted. For large quantities, use your town compost facility.

We will tell you before we drop the bin if anything on your list is a problem. No surprises on pickup day.

Loading Tips for the 15-Yard

  • Heavy stuff on the bottom. Concrete, tile, brick. Load it first.
  • Break down bulky items. Furniture, boxes, shelving. Flat items stack better.
  • Fill gaps with smaller debris. A well-loaded 15-yard holds more than you think.
  • Do not load past the fill line. We cannot legally haul an overloaded container. If it is over the line, we either dump some out or charge a re-dump fee.
  • Pull out the metal. Copper, brass, aluminum, steel have scrap value. Either we handle it or you drop it at a metal yard and keep the check.

At McDumpsters, our 15-yard dumpster (our smallest) is $350 flat. That includes delivery, pickup, and a 72-hour rental period. You also pay $0.20 per pound based on the actual dump ticket. Most residential projects run $500 to $800 total. National companies charge around $582 for a smaller 10-yard dumpster before fees.

How long can I keep the dumpster?

The standard rental period is 72 hours (3 full days). If you need more time, extra days are $15 per day. Most projects finish within the standard window.

What can I put in a 15-yard dumpster?

Furniture, appliances, construction debris, drywall, flooring, yard waste (small amounts), electronics, and general household junk. We do not take hazardous materials, medical waste, or appliances with refrigerant unless properly evacuated.

Do I need a permit for a dumpster in Massachusetts?

If the dumpster sits on your private property (driveway), usually no. If it needs to go on a public street, your town may require a permit. Check with your town clerk or public works department. We know the rules for most of our 13 service towns and can advise you.

What happens if I go over the weight limit?

We charge $65 per ton over the included weight allowance. You can avoid surprises by loading heavy materials at the bottom and telling us upfront if you have concrete, dirt, or shingles so we can spec the right tonnage.

Is a 15-yard dumpster big enough for a kitchen remodel?

Yes, for most kitchen remodels. A standard kitchen gut with cabinets, countertops, flooring, and drywall fits in a 15-yard. If you are also removing walls or doing structural work, consider a 20-yard ($400). We will help you pick the right size when you call.

Should I rent a dumpster or hire junk removal?

If you want to load at your pace over several days, rent the dumpster. If you want to point at stuff and have it disappear, hire junk removal. We do both and will tell you honestly which one saves you money for your specific project. Read our [dumpster rental vs. junk removal guide](/blog/dumpster-rental-vs-junk-removal-guide) for the full breakdown.

What is the difference between a 10-yard and 15-yard dumpster?
