Flooring Removal Cost: Tile, Hardwood, Vinyl & Carpet Guide - McDumpsters

Replacing your floors starts with removing the old ones, and flooring removal is often more work than homeowners expect. Tile bonded to concrete, hardwood nailed to subfloor, vinyl glued with decades-old adhesive — each material presents different challenges and costs. In Massachusetts, professional flooring removal costs $1 to $6 per square foot depending on the material and what is underneath. McDumpsters provides flooring demolition and debris removal across Middlesex County with all hauling included.

Flooring Removal Cost by Material

| Material | Cost Per Sq Ft | 200 Sq Ft Room |

|----------|---------------|----------------|

| Carpet and pad | $1 - $1.50 | $200 - $300 |

| Laminate (floating) | $1 - $2 | $200 - $400 |

| Vinyl sheet/plank | $1.50 - $3 | $300 - $600 |

| Hardwood (nail-down) | $2 - $4 | $400 - $800 |

| Ceramic/porcelain tile | $3 - $5 | $600 - $1,000 |

| Natural stone tile | $4 - $6 | $800 - $1,200 |

| Multiple layers | $3 - $6 | $600 - $1,200 |

What Affects Flooring Removal Cost?

Material Difficulty

Carpet is the easiest — cut, roll, and carry out. Tile on a concrete slab is the hardest — each piece must be chipped off. Hardwood and vinyl fall in between.

Adhesive

Glue-down flooring (vinyl, some hardwood, tile) requires scraping the adhesive off the subfloor after the flooring comes up. This can double the labor time. Older adhesives may contain asbestos.

Layers

Older homes often have multiple flooring layers stacked on top of each other — new vinyl over old vinyl over original hardwood. Each layer adds time and cost.

Subfloor Condition

After flooring removal, the subfloor may need:

  • Scraping: Remove remaining adhesive for a smooth surface
  • Leveling: Fill low spots and grind high spots
  • Repair: Replace damaged plywood sections
  • Moisture barrier: Especially in basements

Asbestos in Old Vinyl Flooring

This is critical for Massachusetts homeowners. Vinyl floor tiles manufactured before 1980 commonly contain asbestos, especially:

  • 9x9 inch tiles (the most common asbestos-containing size)
  • The black adhesive (mastic) underneath vinyl tiles
  • Vinyl sheet flooring backing

Massachusetts requires asbestos testing before disturbing suspected materials. If your home was built before 1980 and has old vinyl flooring, do not remove it yourself. Have it tested first.

DIY vs. Professional Flooring Removal

| Factor | DIY | Professional |

|--------|-----|-------------|

| Carpet | Easy — cut and roll | Worth it for large areas |

| Laminate | Easy if floating | Worth it for glue-down |

| Vinyl | Moderate — adhesive is the hard part | Strongly recommended for pre-1980 |

| Hardwood | Hard — nails are tedious | Recommended for large areas |

| Tile | Very hard — heavy, dusty, slow | Strongly recommended |

How Much Debris Does Flooring Removal Create?

  • Carpet: 200 sq ft = about 4-6 rolled bundles, fits in a truck easily
  • Tile: 200 sq ft = approximately 800-1,200 lbs of tile and backerboard
  • Hardwood: 200 sq ft = approximately 400-600 lbs of wood planks
